not to step on mike's line, but if you use a too wide tire on the rim, the beads wont seat right and can cause tire failure. picture the tire's width at the tread pinched down from 12.5 inches to 6.5 or 7.5 inches at the rim. beads that are supposed to sit flat on the rim and flush to the outer rings do not sit flat or flush. in a tubeless setup, you would likely have more chance of a failure due to loss of air than in a tube setup. not safe either way, but make your own informed decision.
