Babbit is harder than pure lead, and has a lower melting point so is easier to apply. And then a shiney plating of tin. And I think it corrodes away more than wears, until you have several thousandths of clearance, then things get beat out.

If you think it may be time for an oil change, taste it. Just a wet finger tip. Fresh oil is like cooking oil, pretty tasteless, just oily. Old oil builds up bitter acids from the sludge and blow-by, and those acids dissolve bearings. Almost as bitter as brake fluid. Taste means a lot more than appearance.
