Don: If I understand it you are chasing low oil pressure issues and burning oil. (smoke out the exhaust) The bad news is you certainly did modify the bearing cap in a way it was never designed. On the bright side, you will be fixing on issue at a time chasing ghosts. Get the engine rebuilt and be done with it. And I can save you some time and money along the way.... don't bother changing to a higher viscosity oil, that does not repair worn bearings, it only increases the oil pressure....
