Thanks for the input. The consensus is a strong leanings toward a rebuild, and I agree in general, but I don't think I can stomach that right now.

It's smokey, so it does need rings so the bearings/rings would make sense, but I don't like the wasted effort scenario (e.g. if it is the cam bearings).

At the other end of the spectrum (e.g. the fix it before your wife finds out) : what would be the worst-case scenario if I just replace the bearing and bearing cap which I mangled (the studs don't appear to be bent in any way)? Would knock be the first sign that it didn't work? Could this end up causing additional serious damage (e.g. block or crank?).

In the short term this is an around-the yard truck for plowing, with "improvements" during the summer.
