I use a mike to find the smallest diameter on the journal, and stick the plastigage there. Or maybe the mike alone says it's worn too far. To me the main use of plastigage is to verify clearances when you put it back together with the new bearing shells so there's no need to find the thinnest spot of the shell. Also, if the journal has been ground, which is usually the case, it doesn't matter where you stick the plastigage.
