The second phase of the gas tank cleaning process (see Gas Tank Electrolysis below) was to remove the remaining varnish from the bottom. I dumped 2 gallons of E85 gas into the tank on Saturday evening. 48 hours later I dumped a gallon of 3/8" crushed granite in the tank and spent an hour sloshing the mixture around. The results are amazing! The bottom of the tanks looks brand new, and the zinc coating appears to be intact. The sides and top of the tank have very minor rust pitting/discoloration, but no signs of any actual rust. Now all I have to do is reattach the loose baffle, and the tank will be ready to paint and reinstall.

The gas station attendant said they are phasing out the E85 fuel. Too bad, since it's a very cheap way to buy ethyl alcohol.
