The only British rig I've worked on was a Vauxhal, which I think was a shrunken British Chevy with Lucas electrics. But it wasn't just the electrical system the British engineers "improved" over the American version. They apparently decided it would look neat to move the gas filler onto the trunk deck just to the left of the trunk lid, which area had been sculpted into a streamlined valley on each side of the truck. The gas filler, of course, was in a pocket recessed under a cover, so it would all be nice and smooth. Of course the cover wasn't waterproof and valley served effectively as a ditch to direct half the the rain that fell on the rear of the car into the gas filler compartment. The British engineers, not being complete idiots about rain, anticipated this and provided a tiny drain hole in the bottom of this compartment. Of course the drain hole plugged up instantly from about any excuse, causing the rain to fill up the pocket and run down into the gas tank, rusting it out and making the car hard to start. I pumped a lot of water out of the fuel pump, trying to start that car, before I took a look at the gas filler and saw how it was all getting in.
