Greggggg is right about the coolant. I use something called final charge from NAPA and it is a long life diesel coolant that you don't have to keep adding additives to on the coolant.
Regarding plugging it in. Where I live in Maryland we don't really have winter, but when I did fixed my cold start problem I did some tests when it was left outside overnight and the temps were in the single digits. It started up with one cycle of the glow plugs and in less than three seconds. THE STARTER NEEDS TO SPIN FAST!
Also, not enough can be said about the glow plugs. Do not get them from Advance, Pep boys etc, get them from Ford or better or pay the price....
