Thanks, Jerry. The sad part is that this issue is seeing some in the area pumping water out of their homes into their neighbors' yards and it's like dominos. Ill feelings between neighbors are becoming more common place as they all try to save their own. Temps are now forecast to drop into single digits within days.

The other sad part is that a developer bought 160 acres of this area about 20 years ago and it had been known as a wetland 30-50 years ago. He subdivided it, put in unpermitted drainage ditches (we still have little zoning or coding up here in unicorporated areas) and then sold the plots.

Folks bought what looked like dry land, there are no records of what was done (this is Alaska where we are not as governed as folks in the Lower 49), and now these people are living on top of what was wetlands. Could they have done more due diligence, maybe by talking to folks who had lived here 50 years ago, but even then the old timers' recollections might have been suspect.

To the other commenters: yes, there have been far far worse disasters and I pray for those that have dealt with those nightmares and loss of loved ones and homes. I know some of them. I wrote about this local "disaster" because it is in my backyard and many of you write OT about your backyard.
