The examples I stated above were for aftermarket reman engines. I have run across only a few reman 4bt engines that were done by Cummins, they were in privately owned equipment or by smaller companies. That is why your numbers are in their database and I don't doubt yours are good quality reman engines. You are very fortunate to come across them.
The vast majority of 4bt reman engines I came across were done by third party companies. It's the third party numbers I was talking about that are meaningless to Cummins. I have yet to see a single reman 4bt come out of a "bread van" that was a genuine Cummins reman engine. As far as the missing tags, I have worked on hundreds of those vans and I can count on one hand how many still had CPL tags on them. I agree they are firmly riveted to the case so I believe they were purposefully removed. I also agree it likely is an indication of a dark period in that engine's history. Why did they use so many aftermarket reman engines? Cummins price for a reman is quite steep compared to the aftermarket reman engines. When you are buying these reman engines by the 100's or even a 1000 at a time for a very large fleet wide repower program they will go with low bid. So long as the engines lasted for the warranty nobody cared.
In the end, even such as in your case where you have a good quality reman engine with a good CPL number that CPL tag is still affixed to a removable part of the engine assembly. Like stamping a car's VIN number on the alternator only. If the IP gets changed to a different type of pump that case must be swapped. Or if the dreaded "killer dowel pin" falls out the case is very likely to get broken and a new case is installed. In some vehicle accidents I have seen the case get broken. I truly wish Cummins would stamp the blocks when they are new. This would make a lot more sense, but they told me more than once they don't stamp them.
