Not sure what the difference is between the check engine and the engine light? An engine light should be tied to a code, or pending code, in the computer that would have to either clear itself or be cleared before the light would go off.

Gas cap is one of the easiest ones to have, but again you will set an evaporative emissions error code in the computer until you tighten the cap. If it comes and goes without you doing anything then some part is starting to fail.

Dealer really should have been able to tell you why the light had been on last, it's one of those things the computer reports I can see it on my home scanner, let alone the machines a dealer would use.
