My engine does not have a CPL plate. I was told by the local cummins dealer that missing plates is relatively common for some reason and I have just ordered parts using the number from another 4bt I have. My engine does have oil squirters for the pistons and the injector pump appears identical to a 6bt truck engine from a 92 dodge I have minus two cylinders. I don't see the epa concerns as a big problem for 50's model trucks that are not emission controlled, maybe I should, but were I live no one really seemed concerned about my trucks emmissions. I beleive even a 4bt into a newer vehicle is iffy because they were designed to medium duty emmission standards.

I work in fire protection and have long admired the 4.5 liter John Deere diesel commonly used on fire pumps. It has an accelerator on the pump similiar to what my 4bt has and is certainly set to a fixed speed for varying load (industrial type). For fire pumps there is a short tie rod between the accelerator ( or whatever the technical term might be governor?) and a bracket on the engine. The speed can be set to anything from idle to at least 2600 rpm which seems to corelate to the on road engines. I realize to oil pans are probably a poor design for vehicle use. This is mostly theoretical and I am overloaded with projects now but with the interest in detroit and perkins diesels I hoped to start a good discussion on the drawbacks to industrial application diesels. One other drawback that comes to mind is thrust bearings. I know 4 and 6bt cummins with manual trannsmissions can have thrust bearing issues at high milage (mine did) and I am guessing most industrial applications don't have high thrust loads, although a tractor might have an automotive style clutch.
