I have owned and driven both, and the 4BT is more robust. The 1004 series replaced the 4.236.

Cummins was well aware of the niche market share that Perkins enjoyed with the smaller 4 and 6 cylinder engines.

Cummins also stole away a top engineer from Perkins. The 4BT and 6BT and nearly the exact same displacement and the 4.236 and 6.354.
