I did take a class in map and air photo interpretation in college taught by an ex CIA guy. Lots of fun, but knowing the local culture was more useful than technical stuff. He stumped the class with a map of southern Idaho. Asked what denomination the church was next to a cemetery at lat/lon. We had place names and not much else. a more social geography was needed to get that answer. Can't remember if it was Mormon or Protestant. I think the place names were Swedish? I should brush up on my geography...
I would have done better in a few classes if I had studied calculus in the library rather than staring at stereo pairs in the map room.
I do get to use maps at work, but not like this. Just lots of start at point A and end at point B. I'd rather learn how to use a total station and make little detailed topo maps. Google earth is great for losing track of time...
