I do like your plan, I had it myself a couple years ago, but couldn't find the correct box.

The loong input shaft allows variability in the column mount location and angle. I like the 'bell joint' that the factories use at the box end, it allows for end play to eliminate stress and vibration. A column and long shaft for the forward mount is probably available from junk yards too.
