Back in 1962 there was apparently no sales tax in Idaho. I found an old newpaper from the early '60s in Washington and people were outraged that the legislature was going to raise the sales tax to 4% and make it apply to clothing. Back then it didn't apply to food or clothing. Now the Washington rate is pushing hard up against 10% in most jurisdictions. I believe the state portion is about 8%, and then there's the "local option" part that can be up to 2% or so. And it applies to clothes, but still not food, although a few years ago they tried to apply it to junk food.
