....In many cases there's a big difference. You do not see this difference in the "SOLD" portion of the "Photo Classifieds" section of this website. It took three years of reading this Forum and watching Ebay for me to just get a feeling of what things were selling for. A month or so back I was considering the site-unseen, over-the-net purchase of a '53 B-4-PW from CA. I asked for and received a great amount of assistance, opinions, and support from the readers of this Forum. I had decided against the purchase and was going to wait for "just the right PW for me." In my "final" email to the seller, I explained my reasons for not buying his truck, thanked him for his cooperation, wished him well, and then at the end of the message, politefully and tactfully mentioned that if he could net sell his truck in his desired timeframe that I would give him (what I considered to be) an embarrassingly low offer. There was an email waiting for me the next morning accepting that offer. Since then I have heard of other such transactions from others on this Forum.
I feel that mainly because of this Forum and its ability to connect folks from all over, that there is a current trend to buy from outside the local area, then pay the high price of transport to get it home. In order for a common hobbiest like myself to just break even, "IF" I were to sell my new/old PW in the near future, I would have to include that transport cost to my price. In Doug's case as a fledgling business owner, he not only has to do the same, but must consider profit margins as well. If the price of PW's as they appear on the national market seems too high, then perhaps the best deals can still be found in the local market, but be prepared to wait for the old trucks to surface in the classifieds.
I have the time to sit here and type such a LONG posting because I'm stuck at home expecting a call from Brad Bottom as my PW is to be delivered this weekend!!!! Bruce Metzger, Woodland Park, CO
