The rule of thumb that I was told ( on a light truck ) is you should be able to get at least four fingers between the frame and the bottom out pad on top of the springs ( or vise versa depending on pad locat1on). I had my front springs on my 37 rearched 2 1/2 years ago ( $160 set) and they seem to be holding up fine. I didn't notice any difference in the ride ( stiffness) but I had also added a winch so maybe that mellowed it out a little.
