Well, the 4.3 Vortec I just picked up came with a polyethylene tank which I took home because it's got the fuel pump in it. Obviously GM, company of the exploding gas tanks, thinks plastic is OK.
When my 1st M37 was rear ended by a drunk going 75 (I was going 20) the metal tank warped but didn't rupture. It had diesel in it of course.
My 1st Landcruiser had a metal tank under the pass. seat inside the cab. Later, Toyota changed the design so the tank was in the same approx. locat1on but under the floorpan.
With a steel tank you need to worry about corrosion. With a plastic tank you have to be careful about pebbles and small metal things like nuts and bolts working their way under the tank. So if you live near the sea and drive on the beach I'd get plastic. If you tend to have rocks or bolts rattling around I'd consider steel.
Both have their pros and cons.
