I might have to disagree with you on this one. B&W diesels can be found in power plants as well as ships. Nine were installed in the Queen Elisabeth II to replace the fuel hungry steam turbines. After replacement, the QEII now gets a whopping 50ft per gallon at normal cruising speed of 28.5 knots (380 tons of fuel per day).

Here is a picture of a B&W diesel. It is not nearly their largest, but you can see the seven men standing on the catwalk. I can not find a picture of their largest completed in 1999, but it must be HUGE.

I think that Europe has taken the diesel a lot more serious than the US. While we were king of the steam and gas turbine, Europe has been working with the slower, more fuel efficient diesel for many many years now. A lot of their power plants are diesel. Heck, their was even a diesel entered in the indy 500. I heard it was disqualified because it had the unfair advanage of not needing to refuel as often as its gas couterparts.
