In the Canadian M37 Operators manual they actually recommend adding oil to the crank case......

It goes like this.... the oil dip stick on Canadian 251 have two additional oil level marks. According to the manual (sic 1952) at temperature down to minus 20F you add one pint of gas to the crankcase before shut down. At cloder..... minus 4of you add anothe pint of gas.

On star up the engine is allowed to idle for 30 minutes to evaporate the gasoline before putting any load on the engine. I wonder who waited in a frozen Dodge for 30 minutes at minus 40 before driving off.

Of course the life of an engine in those days was about 30k miles and they swapped engines in less than 4 hours rather than fiddle with it.

My guess is a little gas if the engine was not driven hard should not kill it.

Maybe the straigh 30 weight oil was better back then.
