I am in the process of putting a 318/NV4500 in my '55. If you have the 2WD version it is too long to bolt to the stock bellhousing locat1on. If you have the 4WD version it may work with the adaptor plate that Charlie describes but the input shaft even on the Dodge version is pretty short. The pilot bushing may have to be very long.
