The Poly 318 has mechanical tappets. The 318LA (wedge) has hydraulic lifters. This is important if you don't want to be adjusting the valves.

You can hop up a 318LA. A .060 overbore brings it up to 327 cu in. You can put on 340/360 heads and enjoy larger valves. You'll need to notch the cylinder slightly for the intake valve. (Intake catalogs will mention 340/360 heads on a 318 as an option.)
You can actually get a 318 to breathe better with stock parts than a small block Chevy with stock parts. By stock parts I mean head swaps, etc.

Here are two books to consider:

"How to Rebuild Small Block Mopar Engines" and "How to Hot Rod Small Block Mopar Engines", both from HP Books. These two books will show you all the basics and all the options. About $17 each, but worth it. Read before you leap.
