Hi Paul,
The 318 A is the Poly, based upon, and from the Hemi Block. They have th emost potential, but are a little heavier and much harder to find parts for, but it can be done, I'm building one now. They came stock with 260 HP in the 4bbl version, the truck Poly had 200Hp with a 2bbl. These motors can turn out 300+ easily, AND still maintain awesome torque and fair mileage. The easiest to find parts for is the 318LA, not as powerful as the Poly but a multitude of parts are available for them. The 318 Magnum is computer controled, with fuel injection. Probably too much foo foo for a Power Wagon, but very capable. Go to a Dodge dealer and order the Mopar Performance Parts catalog for $5 and you will get an idea of the parts availabl efor the 'LA'. The Poly is still around and sometimes they can be found for $200 or less because people do not know what they have. A lot are swaped out for the 318La in the mistaken belief that the 'LA' has more power. (the 'LA' is a wedge, the 'A' is a Hemi type, polyspherical chamber, the only difference is that the spark plugs are outside of the valve train and there is only one row of rockers instead of two as found in the true Hemi) The 'A' and 'LA' will both bolt up to the same bell housing as does the 225 \6.
