My granddad used to use a handyman jack to break the bead. After letting all the air out he would set the tire under the bumber with the jack foot setup on the bead (use a board or something to spread the weight) and jack up the truck. That would usually release the bead. Putting it all back together then he would put the whole thing under the differential before inflating (for safety). Definitely the old time way.
