If you have taken the cones off, you'll need to seat those on the shaft before doing any adjustments. Place the cup on a surface that will allow the splined shaft to pass through so the cone can rest on the cup. Use a brass hammer and strike the end of the splined shaft to seat the cone, do both sides.

All bearing surfaces have to be clean of oil and grease AND dry. Place 1 gasket under the front bearing retainer plate and two at the rear. Tighten both plates without oil seals and check for end and side play, there should be none. Remove gaskets as needed. Once adjustment is reached, you can remove plates and used gasket sealer if you prefer, and install oil seals, then reassemble. Once assembled, squirt oil on bearings and rotate a couple revolutions.
