How important is the dwell, really?

I've always wondered about that, especially at relatively slow speeds. The "timing" that matters is the time at which the points open. That's when the coil sparks. So long as the points close soon enough before that to build up full current in the coil, the exact time that they're closed shouldn't be all that important. I've never found it made any noticeable difference if the dwell was a bit off one way or the other. I could see if you were running a V8 at 5000 rpm, you'd need to every possible microsecond to build up current in the coil, but not with these old rigs.
