I think VPW sells some sort of patch panel, but don't know what it entails. Otherwise the seam is a pretty complex forming, so it would be hard to re-create. Most cut it out and patch with a simpler design. Some just eliminate the seam and install smooth metal but as you discovered the original seam provides structural support as well, so some sort of additional reinforcement is a good idea. I did something to try and keep the look without as much complexity.
