Next noise levels, smoothness, etc are subjective assessments. Drive and an old WM Power Wagon and then a 1980s truck and the late model will likely be comparatively "smooth and quiet" at the same speeds.

This is how I see it after considering using a 1.5:1 M37 NP200 many years ago: Most older t-cases are a bit noisy in low range(non-helical cut gears, IRRC). Thus running it backwards, I would expect that in "OD" it gets noisy just like it does in the normal configuration. I don't know why they would not be atleast as noisy when used backwards as an OD. The noise may be worse as the former input parts, now the output parts, are going to be turning at higher rpm.

Try it out and let us know. I hope it works out great but I expect there will likely be compromise involved.
