That's most likely it (should have a ballast resistor but doesn't), but leaving the ignition switch on while the motor isn't running will burn up coils (and points) too. I think the "accessory" position on the ignition switch was added after radios became popular and people would leave the ignition on with the engine off to listen to the radio. When you do that, if the points happen to be closed at the time, you draw a steady DC current (rather than the usual 30% dwell current) through the coil and points, which overheats them and runs the battery down.
