Some of us older guys don't display our feelings very well, so it's easier for us to tell someone to go, than let them see how we feel. We usually really appreciate what's been said or done, but due to life and upbringing can't display our pleasure - causes all sorts of internal conflicts. Be satisfied what you did was a good thing, depending how hard this guy's background is you might even get a call one day. Well done, but don't sweat it.
