I have a '52 also.
I rebuilt the tranny about 8 years ago. As Clint says the parts are getting pretty scarce. I found a new cluster gear up in the Boston area from a supplier Vaughn told me about, but it was the last one available from them.
Got another (smaller) gear from VPW. Bearings were easier to find.
If you pull it and find what the problem is, you can either do what John says or try to find parts. With the internet you never know.
