Theres a 1 piece setup or a 2-3 piece setup depending on the motor. Most cars had the 1 piece if I remember correctly.........
The slot in the carb piece is so the throttle can go closed if something happens. If you break mount and the throttle pressure linkage gets hung up you are stuck at WOT. This will allow it to go back to idle.
At WOT you want the transmission lever pushed all the way back as far as it can go. This can be adjusted by turned the adjustment at the carb piece or a screw piece down by the firewall.
