This happened on our 32 Ford Roadster with Pertronix in the distributor. Turned out to be one of the wires from the pertronix unit had broken and when the distributor would start to advance, the wire would be pulled apart and stop the engine. Found this by pulling in opposite directions along the wires/wire.
