The shaft is one piece so it does turn all the time. The winch must be disengaged via the the dog clutch on the winch. As far as the carrier or saddle bearing goes I don't know of any suppliers for them. Used ones do appear for sale once in a while. I had a hard time trying to find one so I had a drive line shop do some work on the drive shaft and put a new modern one on it about 12 years ago.
