It's a sealant, and unless male and female are both cut perfectly, need the sealant.

So far as lube goes, it prevents joints from seizing together. Not as necessary on brass, but still seal it.

But it is also too good of a lube for some places. It wil allow the usal dry torque to split iron and aluminum fittings. Take it easy.

And lots of places, I want the joint glues together. Tape let my flow meter swing around, I needed Permatex.
