At least you shouldn't put detergent oil in an old crank case that has a lot of gunk built up. The det will pick up soooo much gunk things will plug up.

So far as viscosity, a good tight engine can use lighter oil. There is no differences in oil clearances except fro wear.

So far a multi-weight, oils all get as thin as water at running temperature. Difference between 10-30 and 10-40 would be negligible.

That's my opinion, and this being the interwebs, you have a right to it. ;^)
