Yeah you gotta pull the axle shaft out. The end of the shafts have splines that go into your differential. you will probably have to take tie rod bar off. Be careful they are heavy. I use a floor jack or trans jack.

Heres the sequence:
Drums off after loosening brake shoes ( clock wise on backside. The two spring cams on the backside of the backplate)
Spindle and backplate off (tap to break loose)
Inside knuckle is a universal joints setup that permits the wheels to turn while distributing power to the wheels. comes right apart then pull the axle shafts out...easy as pie.

You may be opening a can of worms though...then u will see worn parts that you want to replace like seals and bushings.
