I've had guys who worked on the assembly line tell me the same thing, i tend to believe it too. Bars Leak types of products is a good way of making your heater work VERY subpar as it clogs it up. Does the same to the radiator.

One of my friends work on a Chrysler line when Lee Iacocca was in charge. He was a machinist and was instructed to make EVERYTHING work. His job mainly consisted of "saving" motors with bad cylinders, meaning low or no compression. He was instructed to bore just the bad ones and install the oversize piston in there. Bet that made for some interesting conversations if they were ever rebuilt! He said they were told to throw nothing away as they were financially strapped. I guess they figured a paid employee was doing something as opposed to just tossing the bad engine.
