I had an Australian furd product with aluminum head that displayed similar to what you describe, when I pulled the head I found the water ports had eroded enough to allow water to enter the cylinders. Took the head to the shop and they said "no problem, easy fix, lot's of these with the same problem" - when I collected the head a couple days later, I could see where they had welded it. They ground out the corroded section and welded it back up, then machined it. It was still going fine when I eventually sold it several years later.
