In general a longer leaf spring gives a much smoother ride as well. Like if you compare a First Gen rear spring with a Second Gen rear spring...the second gen are way longer yet the spring will still carry the same load & the second gen...well if you compare the two rides the second gen is like a Cadillac.
Also the shackles on the newer vehicles have the vulcanized rubber bushings isolating the springs which I suspect make a big difference.
