Impressive ship. There are not many veterans left who actually sailed on her during WWII. But, there was a volunteer docent who sailed on her as a midshipman decades ago during a tour of Europe.


Unfortunately, the engine room and gun turrets are not open to the public. They will eventually be added as separate tours.

I didn't realize that the command bridge of the ship contains a (really)huge armored cylinder that rises through several decks. The cylinder was where they controlled the ship from during combat. The cylinder walls looked to be 20 inches thick and must have contained enough steel to make many army tanks.
