On the road, does it get worse at more gas? go away when hot? exhaust leak.
In the driveway, does it come and go when you rev or let off? Rod loose.
Go away when warm, even at idle, piston slap or wrist pin.
Automatic? Sometimes flex plates crack, particularly Chevies.
Heat riser valve rattling?
