Knuckle shims?

Ok I'm reading through the shop manual on shimming the upper bearing cap. I understand basically what here saying. The want thre right amount of shims to get the preload right. VPW sent me 4 medal shims (thin) and I have two thicker one that came off the truck. The way I understand it, you use a torque wrench to set the preload, but I don't know how many shims to use, and how to meet spec? Will someone explain this part to me? Thanks.
