I second Manny's suggestions as he covered it all. the only thing I'd add is to put the battery on the opposite side of the exhaust if you're running a single pipe back.

I've had great luck with the Optima batteries as well. I got one 18 years ago for my '57 and never had to jump it yet. I do disconnect when not in use to prevent slow drains. I put one in my truck as well and do not disconnect that one. Hasn't let me down yet. Just not having to deal with the corrosion aspect is enough for me.

They do cost more but most normal batteries have failed with dropped cells for me far earlier.
