The 489 gear set was developed to allow a 20% increase in road speed. It just about exhausts the power available from a stock engine. 430s in a stock motor make the truck anemic and much shifting is required to keep it running up any grade.

i believe if you are going to make the gears, the 489s would cover most users.

the ideal ratio for someone doing a conversion would likely be 489s AND larger tires that bring the ratio closer to the 430s.

if i had to do it again, i would skip the 489s altogether and do 1050 chevron bias plys or find 1100 16 michelins. going with larger tires produces the desired effect of higher road speed and better ride quality and traction. retaining the stock gearing is flexible in that you can have 583s for wheeling and by installing 'road' tires you can have road speed.
