Junoir, sounds like you've got an inertia drive starter, thing of the past these days. As Dave said, you need the sudden overspeed caused by the engine starting to throw the drive back out of the ring gear. Sounds like you only pulled the through bolts, end cap and barrel off the starter motor, which means you didn't remove the drive from the armature shaft or pull the armature out of the endhousing of the starter motor that bolts into the engine (or bellhousing). Therefore the relationship of the drive to the ring gear should be unchanged. Whatever that mechanic did will need to be put back to the way it was. If the drive is engaged in the ring gear that is OK. It'll kick out when the tractor starts. (Unless it's somehow interfering with you completing putting the rest of the tractor together). Here is an old trick for kicking an inertia drive back out after testing the starter on the bench: take starter over to your bench grinder and jam the drive teeth into the wire wheel so you spin the drive in the SAME DIRECTION THE MOTOR TURNS. This kicks the drive out lickety split and the wire brush causes no damage to the teeth of the drive. Hope this helps... Ron in Alberta
