replaced the rear main seal on a 170 allis chalmers gas engine.the repacement went well had no difficulties every thing was throughly washed marked and buffed clean.Installed the flywheel and torqued to specs checked run out on fly wheel less than.003.Installed clutch and pressure plate torqued to specs.the starter is one that has weird looking drive on it (the starter worked great before) the pole or bolt going into the starter was needing attention it was almost grounding out.so popped open the starter installed new copper pole. Now the before i put the engine i tried the starter the starter turns the engine over but the starter will DRIVE will not come out of mesh with the ring gear. took the starter to the garage mechanic there said a collar on the drive with springs and plungers was to far foward.Took starter home now starter does not engage fly wheel its short by what the mechanic moved with the spring and plungers on the drive.so i took the starter apart and set the drive/overunning clutch and gear back to where it was same thing the starter is engaged all the time.the motor is turniing over but i have not have it running i am wondering if with the sprag and one way clutchs and two sets of gears on the drive that when the motor starts the speed of the starter pinion at idle speed flips the little springs back and the one way clutch pulls the pinoin out of the ring gear I think am screwed here feeling really bad about this mess junoir copey
