I really needed the removal tool. My WDT was really stuck inside the block. I tried what you suggested with the pliers and vice grips to no avail. Nothing I had on hand was going to get that tube out. I finally purchased the removal tool and slide hammer, even with them it wasn't easy. It took quite a lot of hammering to get it out. I was afraid that it would break apart inside, it didn't but it was close.
