Especially if everything else looks plausible and the engine turns over.. Easier to braze it up in place, put some oil into the cylinders, and see if it runs than try to swap it out. Worst that can happen is you'll turn a junk engine into a junk engine, and waste a brazing rod or two. Heck, maybe even just patch it with epoxy putty until you have it running and you've convinced you want to keep the motor. Or if it doesn't leak too much. put a hose in the radiator and let it run enough to make up for the leak. Lots of ways to at least see if the motor is worth saving or not.
